The most important thing we can ever do to have a happy, fulfilled and peaceful life is to get to know ourselves. So, do you know you?
It’s time we begin connecting with ourselves to finally obtain that inner peace we are looking for everywhere.
When we were little, instead of teaching us how to know ourselves, we were taught how to stop being ourselves in order to please others.
We were, and still are, being asked to stop looking at ourselves and start looking at everyone else for guidance. This is when things start to go wrong because what should be our strong inner center is now a moving target inside another person, or many. No wonder we can never find peace. But it doesn't have to be that way. That peace we are looking for everywhere is inside of us. All we need to do is to get to know who we really are and connect with ourselves. Who you are is not the same as what you are
First, we need to differentiate 'what' we are from 'who' we are.
What you are is mostly titles and physical objects you were born into or that you acquired as you lived:
Make your own list and every time you read a line, imagine it as if a layer is being removed from you. After all the layers are removed, what’s left is who you really are. Who you really are
Who you really are is that part of you that leaves your body when you cease to exist in this world: your Soul and your Personality.
Soul: is that direct connection with our creator that makes our bodies breathe and function properly. This direct connection also gives us personalized direction in this world -meaning that the direction you receive for your life is not the same direction of your parents or siblings or friends. Each Soul has Its own direction. It's own agenda. It's own purpose. For this same reason is that we cannot follow other peoples directions but our own. Personality: is that set of traits that serve to differentiate ourselves from each other and allow us to experience this life in a certain way. These traits are a mix of positive, neutral and negative traits. Are you ready to get to know yourself? Find your set of traits here and write them down in a piece of paper. When you find a trait you resonate with, just write it down and don't try to reason or judge it. Remember that we all have a mix of positive, neutral and negative traits. Your personality is your flavor added to your actions" -Claudia LeBaron
Personality is also called "ego" and lately there has been a strong urge to get rid of it. But I want you to understand that the ego is not bad, and getting rid of it is impossible because it's a part of you.
In reality what "don't listen to our ego" means is that we should pay attention not to feed the negative traits more than the positive ones. If you don’t like, honor or accept your personality, you will be having a rough time while in this world. You'll feel like you're fighting against the universe, and that's exactly what you would be doing. You already know that doesn't take you to your inner peace, right? So, if you want a pleasant and peaceful experience while in this life, learn to enjoy and respect the way you are -your personality, and learn to listen to your inner guidance -your soul. Now, tell me… have you self-observed yourself enough to recognize who you really are? Have you connected with yourself yet? Do you know who you are?

An insightful and inspiring reminder for us to go beyond the labels we usually put on ourselves and each other. We truly are so much more than that.

Self-awareness is definitely the key to nurturing ourselves and our inner peace. We are indeed so much more than the roles we play and our personality and rejecting any part of ourselves leads to more struggle and less peace. I have come to view the roles I play as opportunities for me to express my personality and live my purpose and that indeed there is fluidity in all of them. Thank you for your blog and space to nurture more self-awareness!

That's right! The roles we play are the only opportunities we have to express our personality. I cannot imagine it any other way. Thank you for your comment Kelley :)

Great blog Claudia! I agree that we need to keep our ego because it makes each of us unique and helps us to set boundaries. I love your discussion about increasing awareness around what' we are from 'who' we are.

Until we really know who we are deep inside is when we begin to find peace. It is the foundation of life and we need to go back to it. I'm so glad you agree with me Lisa :)

You are right Jen. Self-awareness cannot be a destination since we never stop growing and evolving. And yes, we all should have a daily routine that helps us stay self-aware, no matter what it is. It can be meditation like what you and I do, but there are many other forms... whatever works is good right? Thank you Jen ;)

You caught my attention immediately with this sentence: "When we are little, instead of teaching us how to know ourselves, we are being taught how to stop being ourselves in order to please others." Sad, but true, even today. We are so busy teaching our children what to do/not do to fit into a societal norm that we don't often allow them to be themselves. Thank you for teaching how we can let go of those labels & find our true self again!

I'm so glad you mention this Tae. Children are the ones that remember more who they really are than us who have lived longer. Like you said, as we "teach" them how to fit into society we are really saying to them, who you are is not that important.

People always say how awful the ego is and I remember when I was younger and getting into meditating, I found a meditation designed to "get rid of the ego." I found it enticing, but before beginning I had this moment where I realized the ego was a part of me and it wasn't something to get rid of. It was something to learn more about and accept. I then learned to self observe. Enjoyed reading your blog post.

You are correct Lauren... the ego is not awful and we shouldn't try to get "rid of it" because it's part of our whole. Thank you for your comment Lauren ;)
