Just like Physics is the science that helps us take advantage of the Law of Gravity, so is Mental Science a practice to help us take advantage of the Law of Attraction. Although many do not agree that Mental Science is an exact science like Physics, many authors from the late 1800’s until now disagree. What is Mental Science? As I mentioned above, just like Physics helps us take advantage of the Law of Gravity, so Mental Science helps us take advantage of the Law of Attraction. Physics helps us calculate speeds, distances, movements, etc so airplanes can take advantage of gravity and fly on the sky –this is just one example. Mental Science helps us pay attention to our thoughts, desires, emotions, actions, etc so we can attract manifestations with similar essences into our lives. Mental Science is the union of science, healing and spirituality to help us improve ourselves and our lives. Mental Science is not to be confused with the treatment of the mind which is what Psychology does. Mental Science is the practice to help us use our minds to improve ourselves and our lives. Mental Science began its silent revolution in the late 1800’s although most books on the subject were written in the early 1900’s. This revolution is also called the New Thought era. A little History on the New Way of Thinking After doing research I found it very interesting that right around the time when the inquisition was ending, in the 19th century, was when people was able to think more, to write about their findings without fear and teach others matters that were hidden for a long time -matters that were called "occult" and kept secret like Mind Science. They were called occult because talking about them would mean death. Even Issac Newton, was accused of being an occultist when he began talking about gravity and magnetism. It was not until he predicted and showed the return of a comet that people began believing in his theories. After the inquisition time came to an end, people were able to think by and for themselves again without fear. This is when this new form of thinking was made public especially in the United States and England. I also noticed that the early 1900 was a wonderful time for this new thought to flourish, especially here in the US, but unfortunately WWI and WWII came and the great depression right after. Like I have said before, when a person is trying to take care of their survival needs, there is not much to think or do about other stages in life until survival is taken care of. Although some people were able to progress financially during this period, many didn’t have time or mind to think about anything else. Those that really were able to see and take advantage of the new thought movement were the baby boomers. That’s why in the 1960’s people were so much into “peace and love.” They brought Mental Science back to the spot light. They understood the new thought movement and were able to see the connection with spirituality. Once people felt more freedom to think and knew they were safe, more ideas, thoughts and inventions began happening. Freedom is one of the bases of life according to Abraham Hicks. It makes sense since once someone is free to think and be and do whatever they want, the possibilities are endless. This is why technology has advanced so much in the last 100 years. Now fast forward to today. Today people know that they're free to think freely and speak their minds without fear. Sadly many have fallen into a trap that prevents them from thinking for and by themselves, especially those that are trapped by this easy accessible in-your-face media. This is one of the reasons I write, to help people free from themselves. Why do you stay in prison when the door is so wide open?” -Rumi New Thought AuthorsThere are many authors that currently write and teach about Mental Science or New Thought, although now most call it the Law of Attraction. Current authors about this subject are Louise Hay, Deepak Chopra, Neale Donald Walsh, Shakti Gawain, Marianne Williamson, Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, Bruce H. Lipton, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Abraham Hicks and many more. But today I want to focus on pioneers of Mental Science also called pioneers of New Thought. These are authors that began writing about the new way of thinking. Authors that helped us see that each one of us is responsible for creating the life we each are living. Napoleon Hill (1883-1970) –It is very common to hear of someone who has heard about the book “Think and Grow Rich.” This book teaches you how to find the right way of thinking that will take you to live a life of riches in all aspects of your life; a life of abundance. You can find the audio for this book here. A famous quote of Napoleon is “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” James Allen (1864-1912) –James wrote “As a Man Thinketh.” In this book James writes about how the thoughts in our mind affect our external life from character, circumstances, health and achievement. You can find the audio of this book here. One famous quote by James Allen is “Men are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves; they therefore remain bound." Wallace D. Wattles (1860-1911) –Mental Science is an exact science says author Wallace Wattles of “The Science of Getting Rich” book. He claims that if you do things in a certain way, you can have the exact same results of richness as others. You can find his audio book here. One of Wallace’s famous quotes is “A man’s way of doing things is the direct result of the way he thinks about things." Judge Thomas Troward (1847-1916) –Judge Troward was a very religions man that mixed his interest of mental science and spirituality in his teachings. His most famous book is the “Edinburg Lectures on Mental Science.” You can find his book in a pdf format here or his audio book here. One of his most famous quotes is “The action of Mind (thought) plants that nucleus which, if allowed to grow undisturbed, will eventually attract to itself all the conditions necessary for its manifestation in outward visible form." Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) –Emerson wrote mostly about the ability that humans have to realize almost anything they desire. You can find most of his work listed on this page. He has so many famous quotes, like most writers of the new thought era, but one of his famous ones is “To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment." Phineas P. Quimby (1802-1866) –Quimby was born in Lebanon, New Hampshire and is believed to be the father of the New Thought era since he was able to heal himself from tuberculosis through the use of his mind. He taught his methods to others and that’s how Mental Science is believed to have started. You can learn more about him here. One of Quimby’s ideas expressed by Horatio W. Dresser is “Disease is due to false reasoning in regard to sensations, which man unwittingly develops by impressing wrong thoughts and mental pictures upon the subconscious spiritual matter." Even though most of the now famous Mental Science books were written by men, there were many women participating in the New Thought movement as well. Most of these women began their own movements and created new practices. Some of them are: Mary Baker Eddy founder of Christian Science, Emma Curtis Hopkins started her own school, Helen Wilmans started her own paper, Genevieve Behrend was the only personal student of Thomas Troward, Dr. Julia Seton Sears founder of the Church and School of the New Civilization, Ursula Newell Gestefeld founded the Illinois Woman's Press Association, Lillian DeWaters forming her own publishing house, Myrtle Page Fillmore co-founder of Unity church. There are many more authors and thinkers of Mental Science and New Thought, you can find some of them listed here and also almost at the bottom of this page. Real Change of Mind is not overnightIt is very possible to change our lives based on how we desire to use our minds. We need to be aware that we are the masters, the ones in control of our mind, and no one else can change that. When other people, circumstances and events are in control of our minds, it's because we allow it to be that way. I know it because I lived it, but no more. I'm not asking you to believe what I’m writing; I'm asking you to think, research and find what resonates with you. I'm asking you to wake up and take control of your life. And if what I’m saying resonates with you, let me tell you that in order to change your way of thinking you need to be determined to do so. It will probably take more time than what many people, especially those that are after your money, want you to believe. Changing your way of thinking is a not a quick fix. It requires dedication, belief, hope, action and practice, practice, practice... but it's possible. I did it and I can help you do it too. I have been on this truth journey since I was young as well but I didn't know it until a few years ago. Isn't interesting how our Soul is always guiding us to our own truth? Muchas gracias to you Lore <3

I'm so glad you appreciate it Andrea! Thank you for letting me know and have fun exploring about Quimby ;) 8/10/2016 09:40:15 am
Lovely post, Claudia, and a great overview of the history of 'New Thought.' I borrowed a children's book to read with my 8-year old son, The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett, initially published in serial format beginning in 1910, and was so surprised to discover that it is actually a (quite intentional, I believe) 'stealth conveyor' of 'Mental Science' couched in a delightful children's story. Art has so much power to infiltrate the mind and I know this deeply beloved book had a tremendous effect in the world. A fun discovery I thought you'd be interested in.

I have seen children's books like that but mostly short stories written in the last few years. I hadn't heard about a "Mental Science" children's book written that long ago; I will definitely look for it. Thank you Reba, I appreciate you sharing your fun discovery :) Great post about using our thoughts to change our life. I loved all the quotes from authors (some are familiar & some I'd never heard). This one "Change your thoughts and you change your world" by Norman Vincent reminds me of our very own #VFA sister-author Debra Oakland's recent book "Change your Movie; Change your Life." It's all about our retraining our thought process.

That's because it is where all creation begins, in our thoughts. Bad thoughts bad creations, good thoughts good creations. 8/10/2016 07:26:30 pm
I have read many of these authors but wonder if there are any women writing on mental science? Along these lines I love this quote from Buddha that I have hanging in my home, " Remember, happiness doesn't depend on who you are or what you have. It depends solely on what you think." Thank you for the thoughtful post!

Yes, there were some women writing on the subject but it seems most of them focused on teaching and starting new practices and their own movements. I love that quote!.. It's so true. Appreciate your comment Kelley :)

Yes, very contagious! Knowing that should help us feel more hopeful since we don't have to start from zero, we can get a jump start from positive people and go from there. Changing our thoughts is easier than we think it is. Thank you for your comment Kari :) Comments are closed.
