New Years are opportunities to begin again; opportunities to try again, to do it all over again; and opportunities to correct direction. Have you thought about what you're going to do this time?
Use these few first days of the year to get clear and intentional about what you want to put in the clear glass of your life.
An empty and clean glass cup
Imagine a clear glass cup full of what happened last year. This is a glass cup that contains everything that happened last year, everything good and bad. Do you see it? Take a look at it and tell me, what do you see in it?
Maybe some rocks, diamonds, some sand, precious stones, clear water, muddy water, colored water? Make sure everything important to you is there –including good things and bad things.
How do you feel when you look at it? Happy, satisfied, proud? Sad, disappointed, embarrassed? Or maybe a mix of all of those? Find the overall feeling of what happened last year for you.
Now, hold the cup, stretch your arm and dump it all out. That’s right, empty the glass cup. Last year is gone and you don’t need any of that any more. You have a chance to start anew again, with an empty and clean cup.
The time to start filling your cup has begun
The time to start putting stuff in your cup has begun again. Have you consciously thought of what to put in it? How do you want your cup to look like at the end of this year?
Before you begin to think about it, let me suggest that you start by striving for clarity. What do I mean by that? I mean that you give some thought to what you want and be clear about it.
Do you know what you want? If you do, awesome. Begin by writing down what you want to happen for you this year. Or even in the next five years but write things down that you can begin doing this year.
You don’t know what you want? Then begin by thinking what things for sure you don’t want. Then use those statements to convert them into things that you do want and write them down. Only write down things that you do want.
What you do want
Not many people live their lives intentionally and that's very sad. If you have the opportunity to desire and want new things every year, every month, every week, every day, every moment, then why not give yourself the opportunity and go after them?
If you think about this you’ll realize that the only person stopping us from achieving our dreams is ourselves. The only thing stopping us from achieving our dreams is the insecure, fearful and shameful part of ourselves. Let’s end that today. Let’s live life with purpose and let’s start again today.
So, what things did you realize you want for yourself this year? Do you want this New Year to be similar to last year, then keep doing what you were doing. But if you’re like most people, I think you’ll need to make some modifications. I know for sure I do need to make them.
Or maybe you need to change some things completely. Do you need a new job? Do you need to get away from some toxic people, do you need to find good energy people, do you need to drop some bad habits and adopt some good ones? Whatever you want, believe you can achieve it, be clear and intentional about it, and go for it. You'd be happier if you do.
New Year's Day. A fresh start. A new chapter in life waiting to be written. New questions to be asked, embraced, and loved. Answers to be discovered and then lived in this transformative year of delight and self-discovery. Today carve out a quiet interlude for yourself in which to dream, pen in hand. Only dreams give birth to change.” –Sarah Ban Breathnach
Begin this year with the right foot and give it some thought. Make a commitment with yourself to make the necessary changes, and whatever change you make, make sure it always feels good and it's fun! Now, tell me, what are you going to put in your cup this year?
